standard 5: using content knowledge to build meaningful curriculum
Standard 5 is using content knowledge to build meaningful curriculum. A closer look at the standard means that you need to understand content knowledge and resources in academic disciplines such as language and literacy, the arts, mathematics, science, physical activity, health and safety, and social studies. We also need to know and use the central concepts, inquiry tools, and structures of content areas or academic disciplines. The biggest part of this standard though is using that knowledge and appropriate early learning standards to design, implement, and evaluate developmentally meaningful and challenging curriculum for each child.
The artifact I have chosen to represent my understanding is my unit plan. It may be only one artifact, but it is a large enough one to cover this entire standard. My unit includes a unit overview, my Guided Language Acquisition Device (GLAD) lesson plan, and all of the centers that were used in my classroom. It has been a large unit, and even now there are things I believe I could add to my unit, but that’s the beautiful thing about units, they are always evolving and changing. Units are meant to become bigger and better with age.
My unit overview includes lists of activities from most of the content areas (those that are not included in space are still being done in the classroom, they are just not related to our space theme) and the standards that align with the activities. In the case of literacy and math this is all done in common core. I believe that this represents my knowledge of the appropriate standards that we use in our school, but I also believe that it shows that I can use many different strategies to teach the central concepts in the classroom.
The individual lesson plans that go with this unit go well with developing meaningful and challenging curriculum. In my classroom we do a lot of centers, and we developed centers that the students would enjoy, but that they would also learn from. All of the lessons are meant to challenge the students, and help them understand the concepts we are presenting in class.
I believe that I showed content knowledge just by creating this unit and the lessons. I showed that I understand what I am teaching the students, and that I understood how I would have to present it to the students so that they would be able to understand the content. Throughout the quarter I have also developed games, and worksheets that the students have worked with. I developed these activities by closely looking at the standards, and then by observing my students to see what they needed the most help with. That allowed me to specialize the lessons I was creating for what my students needed the most.
