standard 4: using developmentally effective APPROACHES to connect with children and families
Standard 4 is using developmentally effective approaches to connect with children and families. It involves understanding positive relationships and supportive interactions are the foundation of your work with young students. This standard also calls for knowing and understanding effective strategies and tools for early education, including appropriate uses of technology and using a broad repertoire of developmentally appropriate teaching and learning approaches. It also calls for a teacher to reflect on their own practice to promote positive outcomes for each child.
The artifacts I have chosen to demonstrate my competence in this standard are my management plan, my classroom set up, my Guided Language Acquisition Device (GLAD) lesson plan, and some of my Daily 5 plans. These artifacts demonstrate my competence because they illustrate how I used developmentally effective approaches to connect with families, but it also shows that I know what strategies and tools should be used in early childhood education.
My first artifact is my management plan which lists out what I expect to see in my classroom and my classroom rules. It also discusses discipline and what I will do in regard to discipline. I believe that this represents this standard because I am building positive relationships with my students and use supportive interactions with my management plan. When a student gets in trouble I make sure to tell them that this does not mean they are a bad kid, or that I do not like them, it just means that they have something they need to work on. I then support them by helping them come up with a plan so that they do not keep making the same mistakes. This system of classroom management also allows the students to take more responsibility for their actions, which I believe is a lifelong skill that we should help all of our students develop.
The next artifact is my classroom set up. I have set my classroom set up so that it will promote positive outcomes for each student. I want my students to be success and I know that environment can be a huge factor in that. I have built my classroom set up to encourage developmentally appropriate activities such as sensory table, and also so that the room is fluid. I have tried to avoid potential traffic jams in the classroom, which I know can cause students to get upset.
For this standard I also choose my GLAD lesson plan because I believe it shows how I understand effective strategies and tools for teaching early education. My students cannot sit around all day, so we I made an activity that would get them up and moving. I picked activities that would catch their attention, and kept them interested. I made sure that the times we were sitting were not too long, and that our transitions would go smoothly by adjusting the pace of the next activity (low activity to medium activity to high activity). These are all strategies and tools that are good to include in every lesson so that you can make sure you actually get the opportunity to teach the lesson you want instead of losing the students to boredom and distraction.
My last artifact is a part of our Daily 5 routine. Technology is a huge part of society today, and even at kindergarten we can introduce our students to websites that will be a benefit to their learning. Not only will they be developing an understanding for how to work a computer, but they will also be developing an understanding of a content area. In the case of Daily 5 we use a website called “Starfall.” This website allows the students to read stories, and has an interactive alphabet that they will read to you. Many of the students consider it a game, but they are also learning a lot, and getting exposure to new vocabulary while they are on the site. We also have books on CD or tape that we let the students listen to during the “listening” time. The students were taught how to use our CD player and have a book that they can follow along with when they choose listening. This standard calls for technology to be used appropriately in the classroom. During Daily 5 we always have some type of technology going, and during lesson we show video clips from youtube (which was one of the activities I did during the GLAD lesson).
I believe that I have met this standard because I know how to bring appropriate technology into the classroom, I have shown an understanding for developing a classroom that my students are going to have a positive experience in, and I know how to set up an environment that targets at my student success.
